Service
The Patrol Division of the University of Georgia Police Department is on the job 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We’re the most visible part of the police department, and we serve at the forefront of police operations. Whether on routine patrol, responding to emergency calls for assistance, or simply providing information about our campus, our uniformed officers are here to ensure that your experience on campus is a safe one. Making up more than two-thirds of our Department’s personnel, our patrol officers perform a variety of functions aimed at maintaining the safe learning environment we value at the University of Georgia.
Protection
The primary focus of the patrol division is ensuring the safety and security of the University community. We strive to achieve this by patrolling the University community, traffic enforcement, and responding to various calls for public assistance and welfare. Patrol officers generally work in full uniform and operate in marked police vehicles. However, in today’s ever-changing environment, patrol officers are fluid in their patrolling techniques, which may include foot patrols or covert operations and surveillance.
In addition to patrolling the campus in traditional police vehicles, the patrol division also utilizes bicycles and motorcycles for general and targeted enforcement. Bicycles allow officers to patrol many areas of the university’s 600+ acre campus where vehicles cannot. Motorcycle patrol is utilized to target problem traffic areas on campus. Motorcycle officers patrol during the university’s peak operating hours to ensure that both vehicle and pedestrian safety concerns are addressed.
Excellence
Officers engage in a number of advanced and continuous training courses which enable them to remain at the forefront of the law enforcement profession. Each newly hired officer attends a 408 hour basic law enforcement course at one of the state’s regional police academies. Once certified, officers undergo a rigorous field training program within the police department, which includes advanced certifications and training such as Radar and Intoxilizer Certifications, Standardized Field Sobriety training, Firearms Qualifications, and Defensive Tactics training. In addition, officers rotate through different divisions within the police department in order to gain further knowledge of the overall operations of the department.
